With the holiday season upon us, there are a lot of fun seasonal activities around Austin that can help make your holiday spirit merry and bright. So before you settle in for that cheesy Hallmark movie and chocolate, make sure to get out of the house and enjoy the season a little bit.
Holiday markets and shopping
Whether you are looking for the perfect gift for a loved one or looking to treat yourself, holiday markets are always a fun time to get out and explore. Each one of these markets features trinkets, artisan crafts, and other items that make lovely, thoughtful gifts. We wanted to highlight two of the holiday markets going on in December.
We mentioned the Blue Genie Art Bazaar last month as well, so if you haven’t gone yet then now is the time. Now that the holiday season is officially here, you’ll be able to find holiday-themed gifts just perfect for that special someone. The bazaar showcases the unique work of over 200 artists. The bazaar is open from November 18th through November 24th. The hours daily are 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. until the 24th when the bazaar will close at 6 p.m. Of course, you’ll have your shopping complete by then!
If you are looking for another great market we recommend the Armadillo Bazaar. The Armadillo is known for the live music, fine arts, and gifts. Tickets are required, and can be purchased online. Children 12 and under are free. Passes are also available that allow one entry each day of the event. This shopping destination features both national and local award-winning artists. You can visit the festive atmosphere daily from 11:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. It will certainly be a good time. Happy shopping!
Holiday performing art traditions and cultural events
Now is the perfect time of year to attend a cultural celebration. Throughout December invite the whole family to enjoy the ballet of the Watchmaker and The Nutcracker. The Watchmaker is based on The Nutcracker; however, this immersive performance features many different dance styles. It will be performed at the historic Neill-Cochran House Museum December 8th through the 17th. Of course, Ballet Austin’s performance of The Nutcracker is a show you don’t want to miss. It is Austin’s favorite holiday tradition. Make sure one or both of these iconic ballets is part of your family’s tradition to help put you in the holiday spirit.
Fun activities and a festive date
Looking for an unforgettable holiday date night? Austin is just the city to make it happen. Start by enjoying a slow drive through the Peppermint Parkway light show. This spectacular display is a must see! Once you have enjoyed the beautiful light tunnels and performers, it may be time to stretch your legs. Head on over to the Lamar Whole Foods Ice Skating Rink for some fun on the ice. When you’ve had your fill of skating, head inside to get a nice hot chocolate or apple cider. If you are looking for a little more time together, we recommend visiting the Miracle on 5th Street pop-up cocktail bar. You don’t want to miss this “over-the-top interactive” experience at the most “festive and nostalgic setting in the city”. Settle in for a couple of holiday-themed drinks and enjoy each other’s company over some tasty drinks, snickerdoodle cookies, and holiday spiced nuts. Miracle on 5th Street will be open this year from November 17th through December 27th.
Wherever this holiday season takes you, we hope you have a safe and fun time. At the very least we hope you have some time with loved ones and get to enjoy a little bit of peace for yourself. Happy holidays!
